Pressure, cover and a safe outlet

Cover the inside while a teammate pressures the ball.

8 players · 10 min · 28 × 22 m

The animation shows one played situation with a decision and response, not a required pattern. Regains and restarts are marked schematically; stop unsafe pressure. Finishes use unoccupied practice goals with clear run-off.

Organisation

Three against three with N1 and N2 in separate end strips. Neutrals support possession; only the ball moves freely between the strips.

Execution

Score by linking one neutral to the other through all three outfield players. The nearest defender delays while a second covers the centre. After a regain find the nearest neutral first. Restart out-of-bounds there. Rotate neutrals every two minutes.

Coaching

  • Approach on a curve without contact.
  • Cover diagonally behind the presser.
  • Who protects the second pass after a regain?

Easier

Initially allow only one neutral to possession; focus on cover.

Harder

Allow neutrals to move along their strips and ask the third defender to guard the far lane.

What to observe

Count central passes prevented and first safe passes after regains.

Equipment

Sticks, one active ball, spare balls outside the area and cones; mini-goals where drawn. Dimensions and duration are adaptable starting proposals.

Formation and position role

3-4-3 · Left back

Apply pressure on the left when you are the nearest defender; otherwise cover behind the pressure and protect the inside route. Offer support again after regaining possession.

3-4-3 · Right back

Apply pressure on the right when you are the nearest defender; otherwise cover behind the pressure and protect the inside route. Offer support again after regaining possession.

3-4-3 · Defensive midfielder

Screen the central pass behind the player applying pressure. Shift with the ball and offer a safe first pass immediately after regaining possession.
